Why preserve?
Transport Museum Society of Ireland President, Michael Corcoran, explains why preservation is so important.
"Civilisation depends on the indispensable vehicles that enhance our lives but are taken so much for granted that we do not notice them. Regrettable, because these mechanical chameleons represent the contribution of every section of the community to all the others. Constant, gradual replacement, without anybody realising that they are gone, can eliminate whole generations of these vehicles, thereby wiping out entire swathes of our worthwhile past. Preserved vehicles are an unrivalled repository of social history, stimulating pride in the past and inspiration for the future".
Sixty out of the 100 vehicles currently at the national transport museum in Howth are on display, and others can be inspected by prior arrangement.
The collection is divided into five main standalone categories. These are Passenger, Commercial, Fire & Emergency, Military and Utility.
The oldest transport items in the museum date from 1883, the newest 1984,
This is Ireland's only comprehensive assembly of public service and commercial road transport. Even the humblest vehicles are noteworthy; many are the sole extant examples of once familiar types; several others are very rare and some are unique. Portraying the Golden Age of commercials, the collection includes some 30 marques, more than half of them now demised. All four Irish commercial vehicle builders are represented.
